INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 c packed brown sugar
  • 1-1/4 c flour, divided
  • 1/2 t salt, divided
  • 1 c water
  • 1 t lemon juice
  • 2 t baking powder
  • 5 T butter, divided
  • 1/4 c whole milk
  • 5 c sliced peeled apples
  • 1/2 t plus 1/8 t cinnamon
  • 1/2 t nutmeg
  • 1 t vanilla
  • 1 T coarse sugar

DIRECTIONS:

  1. In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, 1/4 c flour and 1/4 t salt. Add the water and lemon juice; cook and stir over medium heat until thick. Cover and set aside.
  2. Combine the baking powder and the remaining flour and salt.
  3. Cut in 3 T butter. Add the milk and mix just until moistened (a few lumps will remain); set aside.
  4. Arrange apples in a 1-1/2-quart baking dish; sprinkle with 1/2 t cinnamon. Add nutmeg, vanilla and remaining butter to the sauce; stir to combine and pour over apples.
  5. Drop dough by spoonfuls over sauce. Combine remaining cinnamon and coarse sugar; sprinkle over dough.
  6. Bake at 350 degrees until top is brown and apples are tender, 55 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, if desired.
