INGREDIENTS:
- 1 c packed brown sugar
- 1-1/4 c flour, divided
- 1/2 t salt, divided
- 1 c water
- 1 t lemon juice
- 2 t baking powder
- 5 T butter, divided
- 1/4 c whole milk
- 5 c sliced peeled apples
- 1/2 t plus 1/8 t cinnamon
- 1/2 t nutmeg
- 1 t vanilla
- 1 T coarse sugar
DIRECTIONS:
- In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, 1/4 c flour and 1/4 t salt. Add the water and lemon juice; cook and stir over medium heat until thick. Cover and set aside.
- Combine the baking powder and the remaining flour and salt.
- Cut in 3 T butter. Add the milk and mix just until moistened (a few lumps will remain); set aside.
- Arrange apples in a 1-1/2-quart baking dish; sprinkle with 1/2 t cinnamon. Add nutmeg, vanilla and remaining butter to the sauce; stir to combine and pour over apples.
- Drop dough by spoonfuls over sauce. Combine remaining cinnamon and coarse sugar; sprinkle over dough.
- Bake at 350 degrees until top is brown and apples are tender, 55 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, if desired.
